Bay City, February 2010.

He looked out, across the rooftops of the city. Around him, the building croaked and moaned, as if stretching from a deep deep sleep. He could hear the wind speed through the rafters and the skeleton of walls, talking about distance and the sea.

It has been a long day. A long, but content day. He finally felt safer, like he had secured a solid piece of ground on which he could stand. His mind was at rest, and he played with ideas as they came.

Around him, the building re-formed, shaped, grew, broke, grew more. Glass burst, windows trashed, branches grew out of them. The sun went down, and rose again. Stones ran their course, along the walls, around bends, corners, streets.

He loved the city. He was always sad looking across the empty parcels that were theirs. He felt like he needed to put them to use, to do something that would fit this place like nothing else. So much space. So much potential. Such beautiful spots all around. It had to flow.

He followed the stream of ideas, carefully letting the parts flow and take shape. He didn’t want to make mistakes. He didn’t want to make their home less homely, or less beautiful than it was. But he also couldn’t stop the onslaught of ideas.

So much space. But we won’t need that much space. And I can’t place buildings all over. There would have to be plants, trees, beauty. But oh, such a glorious building. What if it broke? What if there were plants inside, on the bottom levels? What if we would live high up, watching out all over the city?

His ideas waned. The building congealed. He looked around, insecure. Like in all things he made, he was unsure of their quality. For him, there were no bad ideas. There were no good ideas either. There were just ideas. And he loved them all. He just wished he would be less clumsy, and faster at bringing them to life. It all seemed to take so much effort.

He looked out, across the rooftops of the city. There were plans, fragments, shattered like the window panes. A bridge across the canal. Trees in the attic. A high and light apartement on top. The building spreading out like a tree itself, it’s walls broken and battered, but the foundation solid, and the top housing so much light, and love. He could just hope he would be able to achieve that.

The walls whispered to him, spoke tales of times long past. He had brought part of their furniture over already, and loved gazing out of the high windows across the rooftops of the city. He felt closer to the sky, with all the glass and light and air around. Aerial.

And the walls whispered. They spoke of the wind, of the sun, of the rain. They talked about the times when they stood proud and strong, when many souls were inside them at all times. Of the times when they were a hotel, or an office, or a restaurant or shop. Proud times.

Maybe it was the wind that held them together. The wind and the memories. He chose the high wide room for their bath and bedroom. It was one of the few parts that were still inhabitable. He would tend to the other parts later, feeling the walls croak even as he thought about it. There would be a living room close to the ground, by the park. A garage somewhere in between. And some place to store his creations.

He felt the building shift, form, grow stronger for all its brittleness. Girders morticing against the wind, the building taking the crooked stance of a man walking in a storm, or a ship in heavy weather. Or maybe a tiger crouching, ready to jump. He looked at the cafe below, forever threatened to be crushed by the Firecaster building. The willows leaves rustled in the wind, and there were birds in the trees.
