This weekend at TGIB: First HG 1.5 tour and Skin class

Well met, Taotics.

I’m very excited to announce the upcoming events this weekend. First, we have the HGAC meeting at 22:00 UTC, where we will start exploring HG 1.5 i6 compatible grids. To attend, you will need to have an account on a grid that’s compatible to HG 1.5 i6 (labeled “Veritas” on the Hypergates Network); optionally, you can create an account on Neo Cortex’ HBase42 or on TGIB itself.

We will meet on a region labeled HGAC on the TGIB standalone. The hypergrid adress is tgib.co.uk:9070:hgac – the region is located at coordinates 7000,7000 to have both the upper and middle hypergrid within teleport range. The first 30 minutes of the meeting will, as usual, be dedicated to introductions and casual conversation.

After that, we will make our first visit, and the destination will be…

Condensation Land

Condensation Land is a mini-grid / standalone at the hypergrid adress condensationland.com:9000, created by Zonja Capalini. It is also one of the oldest grids around, and for me, personally, both Zonja’s blog entries about her departure from SL and arrival in OpenSim, and the example she set with Condensation, have been incredibly helpful when I first started in OpenSim myself.

I have uploaded many more machinimas in Flickr, YouTube and Vimeo, and many of them feature Condensation Land.

I maintain the two blogs (my personal one and the mini-world blog) and I’m the administrator of the Opensim installation. Condensation is a work of love, serves no other purpose than to showcase beautiful things, it resides in a home machine, and its only recurring cost is the (expensive) SDSL line, which is around € 200/month (and my work, but I do that more than willingly in my spare time). We host islands created by myself, Omurtag Milev, Shoshisn Shilova and Mikil Tiki; many people have contributed to the Mirror Worlds exhibition; Arrabal was created by Favio Piek and inspired by Ludmilla Writer; Eastern Gasworks was created by Breen Whitman.

In case of a crash or disconnect, I propose we stay in touch via IRC at irc.freenode.net #hgac; I’ll try to monitor the performance of the sim and hope that everything will go well.

Straight after the meeting, at 23:15 UTC, I will hold my second class for the Content Cooperative about creating and modifying skins for OpenSim / Second Life. We will use Eloh Eliot’s freely available skin templates and have a look at how we can modify them with graphic applications. The only requirement for this class is an application which can open and modify Photoshop .psd files; a free and cross-platform program for this is Gimp.

The class will be held at the TGIB classroom, which is accessible from HG 1.0 at tgib.co.uk:9069:classroom; for those who attended the HGAC meeting and don’t want to relog in a different account, the classroom can also be accessed from HG 1.5 i6 at tgib.co.uk:9070:classroom, and for people wanting to attend from OSGrid compatible regions, there’s a third classroom available at tgib.co.uk:9710:classroom. (All classrooms are connected via IRC, so local chat can be heard across both hypergrid versions.)

How to create a PG version of your skin

In response on a recent comment, here’s how you can create PG versions of the skins from this site by baking the clothing textures directly on them. For this tutorial, we will be using Gimp.

First, open the skin texture of your choice in Gimp, and the clothing texture along with it. Select the window with the clothing texture and chose “select all” from the selection menu (ctrl+a), then select copy (ctrl+c) from the edit menu. Switch over to the window with the skin texture and select paste (ctrl+v) from the edit menu to see your clothing texture applied right onto the skin at the place it is supposed to be. Now save the file under a different name (select “save as” from the file menu). You will be prompted to export the file as .png because it has several layers which png doesn’t support. Select export there and chose a new name for your file. Now upload the newly created skin and follow the tutorial on how to apply it to your avatar.

TGIB Skins verwenden

Skins dieser Seite können kostenlos im OSGrid auf Ever 01 erhalten werden. Zusätzlich biete ich hier die Quelldateien zum Download an, um sie in jedem anderen Grid, inklusive Second Life, zu verwenden. Um einen Skin zu erstellen, laden Sie zuerst alle Texturen herunter, die für den Skin erforderlich sind und laden Sie sie in den Grid, in dem Sie sie verwenden wollen, hoch; oder holen Sie die Texturen in der Region Ever 01 zur Verwendung im OSGrid. (Die Basis-Skins haben gemeinsame obere und untere Sets, die für jedes ihrer Makeups verwende werden können.) Klicken Sie dann mit der rechten Maustaste auf einen Ordner (vorzugsweise den ‘Body Parts’ Ordner) in Ihrem Inventar und wählen Sie ‘new body part’ > ‘new skin’. Ändern Sie die Bezeichnung des Skins wie sie möchten und ziehen Sie ihn dann mit einem Rechtsklick darauf an. Mit einem weiteren Rechtsklick auf ihren Avatar wählen Sie ‘Appearance’, und wählen dann die ‘Skin’ Kategorie. Sie sehen dort drei leere Felder die (missverständlich) ‘head tattoos’, ‘upper tattoos’ und ‘lower tattoos’ genannt werden. Ziehen Sie die entsprechenden Texturen von ihrem Inventar in diese Felder (das Makeup kommt zum ‘head tattoo’, der Oberkörper zum ‘upper tattoo’ und der Unterkörper zum ‘lower tattoo’). Klicken Sie dann auf ‘Save’.

Using TGIB Skins

The skins on this site are freely available on OSGrid at Ever 01. Additionally, I offer the source texture files for download to use them in any other grid, including Second Life. To make a wearable skin, first download all textures needed for the skin and upload them to the grid you like to use them into, or get the textures inworld at Ever 01 for use in OSGrid. (Basic skins have a common upper and lower base that can be used for any of their makeups.) Then right-click on a folder (preferably the ‘Body Parts’ folder) in your inventory and chose ‘new body part’ > ‘new skin’. Rename the skin the way you like, then right click and wear it. Right-click on your avatar and chose ‘appearance’, then select the ‘skin’ tab. You’ll see three empty spaces named (misguidingly) ‘head tattoos’, ‘upper tattoos’ and ‘lower tattoos’. Drag the according texture from your inventory into these spaces (the makeup goes to the ‘head tattoos’, upper body to ‘upper tattoos’ and lower body to ‘lower tattoos’). Then click on save.

It serves as a base for all rosy black skins, the body allowing for different combinations of freckles and body hair. (Regular skins are made to serve all manner of timeframes and interests, and especially makeups that hail from a bygone decade require some different attitude towards body hair.)
